Bio

Ida Alanen (b. 1994) is a young generation pianist and composer from Helsinki, Finland. She is currently based in Amsterdam, completing her master studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam under the instruction of Harmen Fraanje and Karel Boehlee.

For the past three years Ida has been leading her own group, Ida Alanen Trio, which was formed in Covid-time and has worked together closely ever since. In October 2023 the trio released their debut album Awake Asleep with a Norwegian label AMP Music & Records. The album was recorded with the support of The Finnish Cultural Foundation. With reference to the album's title, dreams and dream images form the main theme of the album, bringing subconscious images to light.

Ida finds inspiration to her work from visual arts, nature and experiences in life. Her music alternates effortlessly between carefully orchestrated compositions and the freedom of improvisation. As a pianist Ida has an exceptional sensitivity to melody and simplistic beauty, and strong melodies often have a centric role in her work. Her compositions are filled with colorful details and a rich harmonic palette, where you can also hear the influence of classical music and folk tradition. Ida’s versatile background is present in her unique way of composing and improvising.

Ida has a Bachelor’s degree in music from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences where she studied piano with Mikael Jakobsson and Laszlo Süle. She has also graduated from Pop&Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki, where she studied with Rob Dominis. Ida has studied piano and composition privately with internationally recognized musicians such as Gerald Clayton, Abe Rábade, Omer Klein and Sid Hille. Her composing work has been supported with various grants from The Finnish Cultural Foundation, The Finnish Music Creators' Fund and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
