"Awake Asleep” is a wonderful debut from the Ida Alanen Trio. Highly engaging, quietly intoxicating, and sumptuously imagined. Highly recommended listening.

Ida Alanen Trio
Alongside Ida, the trio is formed by Jonathan Bäckström (double bass), and Benjamin Nylund (drums), who are versatile, composing musicians with unique voices and strong artistic identities. Together, they form one of the most sought-after rhythm sections in Helsinki, also known from the Jonathan Bäckström Quartet among others. The trio has seamless communication, alternating effortlessly between carefully orchestrated compositions and the freedom of improvisation. The group has worked closely together since 2020, performing actively both in Finland and Central Europe.
Debut album Awake Asleep released with a Norwegian label AMP Music & Records
The duality of the two worlds —the dreamworld and the realistic world, the conscious and the subconscious— remains the main theme of the trio’s debut album, Awake Asleep. Exploring the borderland between sleep and wakefulness, it invites images from the subconscious into broad daylight. All the tunes on the album are either directly inspired by dreams, influenced by them, or serve as mirrors to a dreamlike imaginary world. The album was published on October 27th 2023 by the Norwegian record label AMP Music & Records (CD, digital, and Dolby Atmos surround sound).
In the cover of the album there is an artwork by Melek Mazici, who has been inspired with similar elements and themes in her work. The artwork is called Purple Panicle (2016).
The album was also released as a Dolby Atmos surround sound version, among the first Finnish jazz albums. The Dolby Atmos version is supported in Tidal, Apple Music and Amazon Music. It is also available to purchase in Immersive Audio Album.
